The magnificent and gigantic granite building, Vidhana Soudha counts amongst the most impressive as well as the most magnificent buildings in the Bangalore city. It is mainly famous for housing the Legislative Chambers of the state government. The three hundred rooms of Vidhan Soudha accommodate approximately twenty two departments of the state government. The building rises to a height of almost 46 m, making it one of the most imposing structures in the city of Bangalore.

OVERVIEW:


Sri K. Hanumanthaiya, who was Chief Minister of the then Mysore from 1951 to 1956, wanted "Vidhana Soudha" to symbolise the legislative sovereignty of the people. The then Prime Minister Sri Pandit Jawaharalal Nehru laid the foundation on 13th July 1951.The chief engineer of Vidhan Soudha was B.R. Manickam.The construction of the building was started in the year 1952.


The Vidhana Soudha was completed in four years: construction began in 1952 and was finished in 1956. About 5000 labourers and 1500 chisellers, masons and wood-carvers worked on the project with an  expenditure of Rs 1.84 crores. 

ARCHITECTURE:


The architecture of the building is based on Dravidian style, comprising richly carved bases and capitals for pillars, deep friezes, kapotha cornices, chaithya arches, heavy pediments domical finials, etc; At the same time, the construction has been on modern designs, making use of the present-day materials like steel, reinforced cement concrete glass, plastic, etc.

The sprawling building and its surroundings occupy 60 acres. One of the interesting feature of this building in grand stairs in its front. The Vidhana Soudha has three main floors (each of which measures over 1,32,400 sq ft) and a top floor (1,01,165 sq ft). The total floor area adds up to 5,05,505 sq ft. Its overall length is 700 feet, width is 350 feet and height is 150 feet. The building's central dome is sixty feet in diameter and is supported by eight pillars. It also has six smaller domes, four in front and two behind. There are twelve forty foot columns over the entrance steps.

The Vidhana Soudha has twenty two departments and three hundred rooms. The Cabinet room has a huge sandalwood door, which has been beautifully carved.

  • You can find more buses from Majestic Bus stop.
  • There is no direct bus from Electronic City, Silk Board, Madiwala rout. So people who want visit Vidhana Soudha can get down at Corporation stop, from there Bus No.: 77-D will go to Vidhana Soudha Layout.
