Gigantic Khairtabad lord Ganesh

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”
– Maya Angelou

The lord Ganesh idol at the Khairatabad in Hyderabad is one of the tallest Ganesha idols made in India during Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

GANESHA CHATURTHI:

Ganesha Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival. It is the birthday of Ganesha who is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 20 August and 15 September.

ABOUT KHAIRATABAD:

Khairtabad is a large suburb in Hyderabad, India. It is the biggest assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

The area is named after a Khairunnissa whose tomb is located next to the Khairatabad Mosque though the access is to the backside of the monument. This tomb could be of Khair-un-Nissa, the wife of Captain James Achilles Kirkpatrick mentioned in the 2002 book White Mughals by William Dalrymple, though the book doesnt mention any such tomb.

KHAIRATABAD GANESH IDOL:

The lord Ganesh idol in the world is installed at the Khairtabad state library during the Ganesh chaturthi festival and is immersed at Hussain sagar lake.

Sri Ganesh Utsav Committee, Khairatabad, Hyderabad claims the Ganesh idols displayed here, during Ganesh Chaturthi, to be the tallest idols in the world. At the end of the festival, the Ganesh idol is immersed in the Hussain Sagar Lake using cranes.

2007 FESTIVAL:

In 2007, the height of Khairatabad Ganesh is more than 42 feet. Some newspapers are reporting the height of this year's idol as 45 feet (14 meter) and is also in news that this time its been made with eco friendly materials and colors. And the huge Khairatabad Ganesha will appear seated on a throne. Khairatabad Vinayaka Chavithi Ganesh idol was last seen in seated posture in 1982.

GANESH NIMAJJANAM:

Immersion of Ganesha Idols in a Lake or River is called “Ganesha Nimajjanam” in Telugu. Ganesh immersionor Vianayaka Visarjan is the culmination day of 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganapati Navaratri celebrations. Usually, Ganesh immersion is held on Anant Chaturdashi day. In Andhra Pradesh especially Hyderabad Ganesha nimajjan is celebrated with utmost festivity. Genrally Ganesh nimajjan is performed on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th or the 10th day of Ganesh Navratri festival.

On the day of Ganesh Visarjan, a huge procession will take out and various cultural activites like singing, dancing are held during the Ganesh Navratri festival. It is a holiday for all Schools, Shops, few Business establishments and Offices.

After the final worship the Idols are being brought in procession from different areas for immersion at Tank Bund and Necklace Road on Hussain Sagar at some other lakes like Saroornagar and Shamirpet lakes in twin-cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad under the tight security of the Police and several social organizations volunteers.

All the major roads leading to the lake are filled with processions carrying thousands of Ganesha Idols small, big and gigantic and people who have come to see and worship the Idols. There is a lot of merriment going on in the processions with dances, music, fancy dresses and slogan shouting. The immersion of Idols in the lake is expected to continue all through tonight and until next day.

However the modern practice of making beautiful and colorful Ganesha idols with Plaster of Paris and other hazardous materials and chemicals and then immersing these idols in water bodies is certainly very harmful. Hope everyone would realize this before it becomes a major problem.

HOW TO REACH ?

It has a major road junction of five roads called the Khairatabad circle, among the busiest in the city. The roads leading from the junction are towards Somajiguda, Ameerpet, Hussain sagar, Lakdi-ka-pul, and the suburb itself. .

Khairtabad is connected by MMTS Hyderabad, a local train service. Buses are run by the state-owned APSRTC, and is well connected to all parts of Hyderabad .
