Nehru Zoological Park also known as Hyderabad Zoo is the largest zoo in India, located near Mir Alam Tank in Hyderabad. This park is situated at over 380 acres and 600 acres Alam Tank lake and has a wide selection of animals - nearly 3,500 species of birds, animals and reptiles are housed here. The Nehru Zoological Park is one of the foremost and best managed zoos in the country.


The Forest Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh manages the zoo and many individuals and corporates have adopted the care for the animals housed here. This Zoo is at the forefront in our India for creating near natural enclosures for the housing the animals, such as the extensive safari parks and the habitat for nocturnal animals.


HISTORY:

Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad was established in 26 October 1959 with a view to develop a Modern Zoo with simulated natural environment. It was opened to the public on 6 October 1963. The zoo is named after the first prime minister of the India, Jawaharlal Nehru.


The park extends over 380 acres and is a premier natural recreation spot in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The 200 year old Mir Alam Tank lake beside the zoo has unique multiple arched bund and attracts many migratory birds.


In this zoo, there are about 1,500 different kinds of animals are present. Nearly 100 species of birds, animals and reptiles are housed at the zoo, including indigenous animals like the Indian rhino, Asiatic lion, tiger, panther, gaur, orangutan, crocodile, python, as well as deer, kangaroos, antelopes, and birds. The zoo's undulating landscape provides a natural setting to the animals and birds, which are displayed in large enclosures simulating natural habitats

ATTRACTIONS:


Hyderabad zoo also runs different safari trips every day, such as Lion Safari, Tiger Safari, Bear Safari, and Butterfly Safari. Other attractions include elephant rides, a natural history museum, and a children's train. In this park there is also a natural history museum and a children park. There is a train that takes you around the zoo. Elephant rides are very attractive.


Primates like Chimpanzee from Central Africa, Mandrill, Orangatun, Chacma, Olive and yellow baboons (in open islands) etc., and Indian primates include Rhesus, Bonnet, and Monkeys (stump-tailed, lion-tailed and pig-tailed), Golden and common langurs are housed in the zoo. Carnivores like African and Indian lions, Tigers, panthers, jackals, wolves, hyenas, bears etc and reptiles like Giant/ Star tortoises, water turtles, Estuarine crocodiles in open pools, Monitor lizards and chameleons share enclosures, hooded Indian Cobra, Russels Viper, Giant rock-python, tree snakes etc are also found here. Elephants, Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Zebras, American bison, Antelopes, Black buck, Chousingha, Chinkara, Deer, Sambhar, Brow Antler Deer etc. are the herbivores one can enjoy watching.


The lions, both African and Indian are exhibited in this Zoo. It is a treat for the visitors to visit the only safari park for Indian Lions in Asia, with almost natural forest setting. The Tigers both white and normal have their own forest glades. The Panthers (normal&black) are exhibited in large enclosures with rock cliffs. Others include the Wolves, Jackals, Foxes and Hyena. The Weasel group is represented by Ratel and others

It is one of the best visited destinations in Hyderabad. Zoo hours vary by season, and the zoo is closed on Mondays.

The Hyderabad Zoo is located next to the Mir Alam Tank in the South-West corner of the city of Hyderabad.
