Hussain Sagar, Tank Bund at Hyderabad

“Most travel is best of all in the anticipation or the remembering; the reality has more to do with losing your luggage.”

OVERVIEW OF HUSSAIN SAGAR:

With my Parents
Hussain Sagar is a lake in Hyderabad and is the largest man-made Lake in Asia. Hussain Sagar Lake always attracts visitors throughout the year who become mesmerized by its radiant calm blue water. It was built by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562, during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. It was a lake of 24 square kilometres built on a tributary of the River Musi. At that time, the lake was built to feed the crops and the people of the twin cities. The Hussain Sagar became part of the landscape in this region much before the coming of the Charminar.

Hyderabad and Secunderabad are the two cities that are connected to each other by the Hussain Sagar Lake. They are popularly known as twin cities.

OVERVIEW OF TANK BUND:

The Hussain Sagar is marked by the best architectures of both the cities. However, the lake has shrunk in size and is now known as the "Tank Bund". It is an abridged version of its actual area, and has attained lovely trimmings and environs that augment its appeal to tourists as well as the residents of the twin cities.

The Lake doubles up as an important landmark as well as picnic and recreation spot. The Lake is bordered by four major spans of greenery, on the southern side of Hussain Sagar, you have the NTR Memorial, the Secretariat Building and the greenery of the Lumbini Park. There’s also the Hyderabad Boat Club. On the northern side, you can find the Secunderabad Sailing Club, along with the Hazrat Saidani Ma Saheba tomb. You can also find the Sanjeeviah Park. The Lower Tank Bund road was constructed at this end to reduce the congestion of traffic.

Standing on the Tank Bund at night, one is awe-struck to see the glimmering row of lights outlining the lake that look like “a diamond studded necklace”. This is the necklace road being readied to enhance the beauty of Hussain Sagar. The Necklace Road links Lumbini park in Hyderabad with the Sanjeeviah park in Secunderabad.

But the centre of attraction literally and figuratively is the monolithic statue of the Gautam Buddha in the middle of the lake which was erected in 1992. The 16 meter tall, 450 tons monolithic gigantic sculpture rises high from the calm waters of the scenic Hussain Sagar Lake. The statue is entirely made of white granite. It was carved by 200 sculptors for two years. The statue was transported to Hyderabad in November 1988. After the initial problems, the statue was erected on 12th April 1992 on a red coloured Lotus pedestral. A boat ride to the statue of Buddha is an unforgettable one and gives a feeling of immense peace.
