Visakhapatnam also called as Vizag is a major port city on the south east coast of India. It has one of India's largest sea ports and its oldest shipyard. It has the only natural harbour on the east coast of India. The city is nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and faces the Bay of Bengal to the east. A visit to Visakhapatnam is surely incomplete without a visit to the Beach. Visakhapatnam Beaches have always attracted tourists with their beautiful views and serene ambiance. Although less crowded, the beaches in Visakhapatnam are known for water sports and leisure activities. The peaceful surrounding of the beaches are ideal places for people who want to spend their holidays lazing off under the sun. Among the beaches of Visakhapatnam, Rishikonda and Ramakrishna Beaches are the most visited ones.


Rishikonda Beach:

Rishikonda Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of Vishakapatnam, is located within 8 Kilometers from the heart of the city. Counted amongst the virgin beaches of South India, Vizag's Rishikonda Beach is famous for its long stretch of golden sand. The golden sand of Rishikonda Beach makes it a perfect destination for those who love bathing in the sun.

Rishikonda Beach attracts tourists and visitors of all ages. It is also a hot destination for water sports enthusiasts, sunbathers and wind surfers. The beach is bordered with lush green hills that make it a picture perfect place.


Rishikonda has everything that the passionate traveller in you seeks - alluring beaches, hills and adventure water sports - skiing & wind surfing. The sea and hill cottages further enhance your holiday moments. Just right for your honeymoon or to rekindle those nostalgic moments.

This is a very nice and clean beach unlike RK Beach which is in the middle of the town. You can easily access Rishikonda beach by auto richshaw or local taxi.

Ramakrishna Beach (or R.K. Beach):

The Ramakrishna Beach popularly known as RK Beach, which derives its name from the Lord Ramakrishna Mission is the favorite spot for the travellers. It is commonly called is the closest beach park you can reach from the heart of the city. Spreading through the edge of the sea, the R.K.Beach is a great picnic spot to spend time with your loved ones.

A visit to the beach will surely free your mind of tensions and bring in new energy. Sipping a soft drink or biting corn, you can walk on the beach sands or just lie down and de-stress your mind experiencing the cool breeze, looking at the waves and the ships that appear to be moving as slow as a snail.


This offers you the usual joys of the beach - sea, sand and shore plus a Submarine Museum, Visakha Museum, Aquarium, number of road side parks with children play equipments & lawns, War Memorial, statues of eminent personalities and many more are situated in this beach.

You can catch up a bus run by the APSRTC to reach the beach. You can also reach here by local taxi or your own vehicle.


Lawson's Bay Beach:

The Lawson's Bay Beach with golden sands and lush green vegetation is located a little ahead of the RK Beach on the way to Kailasagiri Hill. The shallow crystal clear water of the beach is ideal for sea bathing and surfing. Sometimes known as Peddawaltair Beach, it presents a picturesque and scenic beauty of nature.

Bheemunipatnam (Bheemili) beach:

The Bheemunipatnam beach also known as Bheemili beach is among the top three beaches in Visakhapatnam. It is located on the mouth of river Gosthani. It is also the site of the remains of the east coast’s oldest Dutch settlement. The way from Vizag to Bheemunipatnam is very exciting experience. The beach and refreshing climate combined with the pleasing nature with the lusting greenery makes it an admired beach. The long never-ending shoreline of the sea is bounded by the tall coconut trees which add to the magnificence of the place. The Bheemunipatnam beach offers the tourists with a brilliant opportunity to explore and experience the plentiful gifts of nature. It also has many adventurous sporting events where people can explore their sporting skills and is renowned as the safest and calmest location for swimmers.

Bheemunipatnam is supposed to have originated in the days of the Pandavas (its named after Bheema). Most probably its origins were around the 16th century, when a boat load of Dutch dropped anchor with the intention of making the lovely harbour (the River Gosthani meets the Bay of Bengal).

En route to Bheemunipatnam, the journey is as charming as the destination. The 25 km stretch from Vizag never once lets go of the beautiful coastline. The four lane beach roads is extended from RK beach at Vizag upto Bheemili. While travelling from Vizag sea will be at your right side. The drive from Visakhapatnam to Bheemili is exhilarating. Be sure you don't miss out on 'Erramattidibbalu' - a very creative formation of red sand.


Yarada Beach:

The Yarada beach is a perfect beach to have a holiday out. It is located 15 kms away from to the main city Vizag and offers a fabulous landscape with its exotic blend of golden sands and the lush green stretch of hills. The beach is surrounded by picturesque hills on three sides with Bay of Bengal provides the exotic waves the fourth side.

The beach offers a calm and secluded atmosphere those looking for solitude and mental peace. The beach maintains its cleanliness and majesty, attracting lots of tourists.

APSRTC buses are available to Yarada Village. From there one need to travel by foot. Otherwise hire a car and go to the Yarada Beach.

Gangavaram Beach:

The beautiful Gangavaram Beach, lined with palm trees is located near the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), at a distance of about 26 kms south of Vizag. It is a beautiful picnic spot to get away from the busy city. The beach has a beautiful coastline which attracts number of tourists and film makers. The Gangavaram beach is truly spellbinding.

Note that swimming is strictly forbidden here.


Vizag is also known for its rich Buddhist heritage. The contemporary Buddhist heritage sites - Thotlakonda, Bavikonda and Pavuralakonda - are all located atop hills along the sea between Visakhapatnam and Bheemunipatnam.

HOW TO REACH HERE?


Vishakhapatnam is situated in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is well connected with major cities of India.

By Air:
  • Vishakhapatnam has an airport with regular flights to and from Mumbai, Kolkatta, Hyderabad and Chennai

By Train:
  • Vishakhapatnam is the centre point for the trains between Chennai and Howra and Howrah and Secunderabad and is well connected by railway network to all the important places in Andhra Pradesh and in India.

By Road:
  • National Highway No.5 passes through Vishakhapatnam and bus services connect it to and from all the major cities of the state and the cities in the neighboring states of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. 
  • APSRTC as well private operators run buses to Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar and Tirupati.

By Ship:
  • This mode of travelling is not very popular, yet there is one ship to reach Vishakhapatnam, which comes here from Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
